My mom's story of the birth

And this is an email my mom wrote about the birth......

They named him Benjamin Michael-George Powell (even though Jeremiah wanted his last name to be "Sam Witwicky"- can you tell what his favorite movie is?) He was born about 3:50 pm on March 11th. He weighed 9 pounds 7 ounces (ouch), and is 21 1/4 inches long. He has very long feet too- his newborn socks are almost too small already LOL His apgar scores were 8 and 9
Anne had 3 midwives in with her and Alex when she gave birth. Our first clue was the soft cry of a baby that dad barely heard over the noise of the boys. So dad called the boys over to the door and we could all hear the baby crying- good lungs!!! Anne told me later that he didn't cry when he was born- so this was several minutes later. Later, after Matthew went in and saw the baby he told me excitedly "the baby came out of mommy's tummy!!!" Jeremiah wanted to know HOW the baby came out... Anne stalled and Alex said "he just popped out" Jeremiah was satisfied with that answer.
Matthew later told his grandma Gale that the baby was going back into mommy's tummy... not if mommy has anything to say about it :-).... maybe that is just wishful thinking? LOL It's funny to hear kids comments... Matthew came out of the room one time and announced "mommy's naked".... we all started laughing.... When grandpa Dan asked Joshua what he thought of his baby brother, Joshua just shrugged. Dan asked him if he had one nose- Joshua laughed and said "he's supposed to have only one nose" :-) Joshua also proudly announced that he was the biggest brother of Benjamin.
Before we knew for sure what his name would be, I asked Joshua what he would like the name to be. He said he really liked Benjamin. When I asked Alex what they named him, he rattled off this very unusual name... What do you say to something like that? So I politely said "that's nice" and he busted out laughing. He was just pulling my leg- hoping for some great reaction.
So it was a fun day- long for Anne. She's a trooper. She's thrilled that it's over. They are very excited to drain the hot tub that has taken up the office space for weeks. I think they will sleep really well tonight. Grandma Gale got the boys bathed and ready for bed while I came home with dad and took care of a few things. I went back and got to hear her reading stories to them. She does such a great job- read with so much drama- I found myself laughing while listening. She's a wonderful grandma. You can tell she loves children. It was fun watching her enjoy hold Benjamin for awhile before she had to head home. She wasn't here when he was born, but arrived soon after. She had to work and there were no substitute teachers available to cover for her today. That was frustrating.
We got to play chauffer and take Jeremiah to school, then pick up Joshua and Jeremiah from school later so they could be home before their brother was born. It turned out that it took a little longer than anticipated so Joshua could have stayed in school until the day ended- but you never know about these things, right? Even Vesta has been puzzled. She stops and listens, with tilted head, every time she hears Benjamin cry. He nursed and nursed and nursed alot after he was born- not happy when unlatched. But he was contented this evening- fell asleep in Anne's arms (after I got to hold him awhile) without nursing.
So that's the highlights from today. Anne took some great pictures of Benjamin tonight, hopefully she will feel up to posting them in a few days.
